The Empty Tomb

John 20:1

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

 John 20:11-18

11Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. 13They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. 15He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” 16Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). 17Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said to her  Is it true?

Did Mary Magdalene really see Jesus after He had been crucified on the Cross?  Did He rise from the dead three days after His death?  When considering if Christianity is true, it all leads to the truth or falseness in the facts of the resurrection.  The lives of people living today demonstrate that the resurrection is still changing people.   It changes fear into love, despair into joy.  The resurrection changes people from being spiritually dead to being alive to God.  It changes guilty condemnation into a celebration of forgiveness and freedom.  It changes anxiety into a hope that goes beyond the grave.    The resurrection is the foundation for all our future hopes and it is the source of power in our daily lives.  It can give us the courage in the midst of persecution to continue and is the hope in the midst of this world's darkness.

(How the Resurrection Changes Everything | Crossway Articles)

  1. The resurrection offers us the gift of forgiveness.  Jesus now gives us the choice to come to Him and ask for forgiveness and freedom from the sin in our lives only He alone can offer.
  2. The resurrection offers us the gift of Salvation "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you sill be saved"   Romans 10:9
  3. The resurrection gives us the ability to live free "Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life.  Whoever believes in me though he dies yet shall live,'"  John 11:25  - the keyword in this verse is "Whoever"
  4. The resurrection means that we can have hope in our lives.
  5. The resurrection means that we can have the promise of eternal life with Jesus in Heaven.  This world in which we live is not all there is.  There is more to the story.

It is easy to get caught up in the here and now that we forget to live daily with eyes and hearts that remain focused on what is really important.  Jesus reminds us through His resurrection that there is a place for every believer in Heaven with Him.  He is saving us a place and it will never fade away.  It is our inheritance.    If it is true, oh how much it could add to our lives.  Open your heart, seek the truth that is waiting for you.

You are loved.
